On Australia Day the Moonta Remembers weekend was presented the Community Event of the Year award, and rightly so. Peter Murray, president of the Progress Association and Allan Halliwell from the RSL had enlisted the support of other numerous individuals and volunteer groups, and a very successful weekend of activities was the result. It really brought the community together and created a positive and amiable atmosphere at all the events over the October long weekend.
It was refreshing to see so many children and students involved in the Saturday evening events, the Remembrance Day service, the Sunday parade and the afternoon games and concert. During the parade school students distributed poppies that they’d made. Some dressed in period costumes and joined the WW1 nursing corps while others proudly carried banners.
Moonta Remembers was an outstanding event. It was a reflection of the willingness of numerous people to take on a good idea and work together with commitment and enthusiasm. In doing so they created an event that was of real value to the community. Well done Moonta!
